In April 2012, two tram enthusiasts from Gothenburg, Sweden visited Chicago. A highlight of their stay was a visit to the East Troy Electric Railroad, where a bunch of us chartered the magnificently restored Sheboygan Light, Power & Railway Co. 26 for a trip over the old TMER&L interurban line between East Troy and Mukwonago. Note that car 26 sported American and Swedish flags for the occasion. An overcast sky parted just in time for a photo stop along Lower Phantom Lake in Mukwonago, affording us the best photo opportunity of the day. Then, as we arrived at the Phantom Woods depot, a Swedish song blared over the loudspeaker to welcome the visitors. Later, a tree branch dangling over the track provided an unplanned photo opportunity. On the drive back to Chicago, we detoured to Kenosha to ride a Toronto PCC car around the streetcar loop. |

While on a trip to Toledo, Ohio to see the Amtrak 40th Anniversary Exhibit Train at Toledo Union Station, I took some time to explore the Toledo area's other rail-related attractions and railfanning spots. What I did not expect to encounter was this, an abandoned Delaware, Lackawanna & Western (later Erie-Lackawanna) electric MU commuter coach, sitting abandoned in Norfolk Southern's ex-Wabash Sumner Street Yard, just southwest of Toledo Union Station along the Maumee River. I'm not sure why it's here, but my guess is that it was headed out to some local railroad museum when someone ran out of money to restore it. The car is in pretty bad shape, though probably not too far gone if someone with enough money and know-how came along. I had a look around and inside it, and plenty of neat little details such as the fans are still intact, despite a lot of damage (including a pantograph that somehow ended up -inside- the car!). In all, a fascinating, sad relic, rather out-of-place and deserving of restoration, or at least salvaging for parts. (More from my Toledo trip coming soon!) ~Thanks for watching!~ |

Read the full What Car? Chevrolet Volt review bit.ly The Chevrolet Volt is amazingly efficient, it completely eliminates range anxiety, and it's comfortable and relaxing to drive. It's cheaper than the Vauxhall Ampera, too. It's far from cheap to buy, and there's huge uncertainty over its resale values. The cabin plastics aren't particularly appealing and rear visibility is rubbish. The Chevrolet Volt gives all the benefits of an electric car, but because it keeps going when the battery depletes, you won't suffer from any range anxiety. Brilliant. |
